Anchor your tent well. If camping at Helen Lake, remember to pee and/or use your wag bag on the far east side of the Helen Lake moraine. Collect snow for water uphill, to the north of camp. Please treat this facility with respect as it is an excellent resource.

The composting toilet at Horse Camp is now open for use. There is running spring water at Horse Camp this is the only place where you will find water on the southside of the mountain. If you will be relying on snow as your water source, be sure to bring extra fuel for your stove. Retreat! Climbing through the Red Banks in Avalanche Gulch offers the best route as the Bergschrund behind Thumb rock is begining to widen. If you see roller balls, pin wheels, small loose wet slides and are sinking into deep, unconsolidated snow.these are all indicators that larger loose wet slides are possible. Watch for rock and icefall, especially as the day warms. We still recommend carrying a beacon, shovel and probe. Think about setting a turnaround time of ~high noon. This avalanche problem can be mitigated by getting on top, and back off the mountain before the heat of the day. The potential for wet loose avalanches remains a concern with large recent debris piles scattering Avalanche Gulch, Old Ski Bowl, and the West Face.

Shasta is a 14,000-foot lightning rod and is frequently hit by lightning (usually in summer and fall months), so don't push your luck with building thunderheads. The best thing you can do to manage this hazard is avoid it entirely. There is a slight chance of late afternoon thunderstorms and lightning. Keep your skin covered and apply sunscreen liberally and often to any exposed skin, wear sunglasses and a hat. One of the biggest hazards you will encounter on the mountain is exposure to the sun. We highly recommend the use of snowshoes from Bunny Flat to Helen Lake, beyond this point don your crampons. Mount Shasta is sailing into mid-May with steadfast and strong climbing conditions. Turning a truck with trailer around is very difficult on busy weekends. Consider launching from other areas like Pilgrim Creek Sno-Park. If parking is unavailable, please park below the lot on the east side of the road to maintain two-way traffic flow, in and out of the trailhead. The parking lot at Bunny Flat is narrower than usual.

Bunny Flat is the only accessible trailhead at this time. A bountiful winter has brought heaps of snow to the mountain. Didn't find what you were looking for?
